Will orthopedic shoes cause my child's feet to weaken over time?

Asked a year ago

Hey there, I am looking to purchase some new shoes for my 3-year-old boy. I have read that orthopedic shoes can help support my child's feet as they grow however I am concerned that if there is too much support that the muscles may weaken over time as they are being underused. Is this a legitimate concern? Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, this is absolutely a legitimate concern. Orthopedic shoes are an excellent option for your child’s feet as they not only support the feet but also improve how your child walks and stands correcting the foot posture. Ortho shoes do not weaken the foot muscles. Instead, they help you not to strain the neighboring muscles that are compensating to distribute load and pressure under the soles of your feet.
